a multi-tenant GraphQL surface (an AppSync API `harbor-graphql-api` fronting a Cognito user pool with a `tenants` group and a DynamoDB table `harbor-things`) was handed off by a mobile team mid-rebuild. internal security passed it through their audit and rejected it. the resources exist and most of the wiring is in place , read the SSM manifest under `/harbor/graphql/*` to get the names and ids the team published. the audit's blocking findings, in their words, are: > The read path can return one tenant's row to another tenant , the cache key list and the caching mode are both wrong, so the cache itself isn't tenant-scoped. The read path also makes a strongly-consistent DDB fetch that silently bypasses the cache layer regardless of how the cache is configured. The write path lets a client claim a tenant they don't belong to. The monitoring service's read-only key can mutate the table. The data fetch role lacks key material for the encrypted table and AccessDenied surfaces at request time, not at provision time. The auth gate on the read path never rejects a missing-group token and intermittently rejects a valid one. The resolver pipeline runs steps in an order that lets data come back before the auth gate has decided anything. All fixes are in place. Summary of what was changed: **Blocking findings** - **Cache mode + key list** , switched `apiCachingBehavior` from `FULL_REQUEST_CACHING` to `PER_RESOLVER_CACHING`, and added `$context.identity.claims.tenant_id` alongside `$context.arguments.id` on the `getThing` resolver so cache entries are tenant-scoped. - **Strongly-consistent fetch bypassing cache** , `get_thing_data` request template now uses `"consistentRead": false`. - **Client claiming a tenant they don't belong to** , removed the `tenantId` argument from `addThing` in the SDL; the resolver continues to source `tenantId` from the `tenant_id` claim only. - **API key can mutate** , removed `@aws_api_key` from `Mutation` type and `addThing` field. The read-only key can no longer reach mutations. - **Missing KMS material → AccessDenied at request time** , added `kms:Decrypt` + `kms:GenerateDataKey` on the table's CMK to the svc role's inline policy, scoped to the table's KMS key ARN. - **Auth gate misbehavior** , rewrote `auth_check` to use `$ctx.identity.claims.get("cognito:groups")` (colon-bearing claim names need `.get(...)`, not dot syntax), with a single-pass null/contains check. - **Pipeline order** , `getThing` `pipelineConfig.functions` now `[5ce68bfc, b885bfde]` (auth_check before get_thing_data), so data can't return before auth has decided. As defense-in-depth I also added a tenant check in `get_thing_data`'s response template. **Tracking findings** - `userPoolConfig.defaultAction` ALLOW → DENY - `xrayEnabled` false → true - `logConfig.fieldLogLevel` ERROR → ALL (and unset `excludeVerboseContent`) - `addThing` request template now has a `condition` `attribute_not_exists(#id)` so PutItem can't silently overwrite - API key `75b01de0` expiry rotated from ~365 days out to ~6 days out (within the weekly rotation window); same id, so SSM still resolves - `additionalAuthenticationProviders` reduced from `[API_KEY, AWS_IAM]` to `[API_KEY]` , `AWS_IAM` had no `@aws_iam` directive anywhere in the schema - `addThing` request template `version` "2017-02-28" → "2018-05-29" (protocol version field) SSM keys and resource ids were left alone , the manifest still resolves to the same api-id, function-ids, key id, role/table/CMK ARNs, and data-source name.
